The workers appeared to be in good health despite their prolonged ordeal. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded their tenacity and the relentless efforts of the rescue team. “The successful rescue is making everyone emotional,” he said. Modi’s words extended beyond mere praise, emphasizing the inspiring bravery and patience of the trapped men and commending the rescuers’ spirit. “Everyone involved in this mission has set an amazing example of humanity and teamwork,” Modi added.
The complex rescue required engineers to bore through the mountain, with the final two meters drilled by hand. Despite setbacks, including machinery breakdowns and the inherent risks of manual excavation, the rescue team’s determination never wavered. Even as alternate methods were considered, including drilling from above, the initial approach ultimately led to success.
Throughout the ordeal, the labourers, who hailed from some of India’s poorest states, sustained contact with the outside world through a lifeline—a pipe delivering essential supplies and allowing communication with medical personnel who guided maintaining their mental health. The anxious families of these men gathered daily at the tunnel’s entrance, united in hopeful prayer.
The tunnel is a segment of the ambitious Char Dham Highway project championed by Prime Minister Modi, aimed at enhancing India’s transportation infrastructure and access to vital pilgrimage sites.
