Slovakia’s President Stands Firm in the Face of Climate Change Denial

In an unprecedented move, Slovakia’s President Zuzana Caputova has refused to appoint a nominated candidate for the position of environment minister, citing his opposition to climate change policy and advocacy of violence against environmentalists as disqualifying factors. This decision comes in the wake of last month’s parliamentary election and has postponed the new Cabinet’s formation.

President Caputova announced on Thursday that she cannot accept the nomination of Rudolf Huliak, proposed by the ultranationalist and pro-Russian Slovak National Party. Huliak, mayor of the town of Ocova in central Slovakia, has expressed views that contradict the government’s long-term environmental policies and Slovakia’s international commitments to addressing climate change. “A candidate who has not recognized the scientific consensus on climate change and asserts no real climate crisis exists cannot be in charge and represent a ministry whose main role is protecting nature, landscape, and the Earth’s climate system,” said President Caputova. Huliak’s advocacy of violence against environmentalists was another significant reason for his rejection.

The Slovak National Party responded to the president’s decision by stating it was not ready to nominate another candidate for the position. This deadlock is a testament to the growing tension between the liberal President Caputova and the Slovak National Party, fueled further by Huliak’s contentious history, which includes attacks on LGBT+ people, the European Union, and expressions of pro-Russian views.
