The health ministry in Gaza reported that hundreds were killed in a sustained aerial assault on Monday morning, bringing the total number of casualties in Gaza since October 7 to over 5,087, including 1,119 women and 2,055 children. An additional 14,245 people have been reported wounded. The ministry stated that most casualties were from the southern part of Gaza.
Amidst the violence, two convoys of aid trucks crossed into Gaza from Egypt over the weekend. However, relief agencies have warned that this aid is a drop in the ocean compared to the vast needs of the 2 million people living in the enclave. Aid workers and international leaders have described the humanitarian situation in Gaza as “catastrophic.”
The medical facilities in Gaza have been decimated, and doctors are being forced to operate without essential medicines, including morphine or painkillers. Leo Cans from Doctors Without Borders highlighted the gravity of the situation, stating, “We have a lot of kids that are unfortunately among the wounded, and I was discussing with one of our surgeons, who received a 10-year-old yesterday, burnt on 60% of the body surface, and he didn’t end up having painkillers. There is no justification to block these essential medicines from reaching the population.”
As the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) prepare for a potential large ground operation, with troops and tanks amassed at the Gaza border, residents in Gaza report feeling unsafe anywhere in the Strip. Amidst the escalating violence, US President Joe Biden has engaged in diplomatic efforts, including a call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, emphasizing the need for a continued flow of humanitarian assistance to Gaza.
