Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), the world’s leading chip manufacturer, is set to expand its footprint in Japan with the announcement of a second semiconductor fabrication plant. The decision reflects TSMC’s commitment to meeting growing customer demand and forms a key part of its strategy to broaden its global presence.
Scheduled to commence construction by the end of 2024, the new facility will be led by TSMC’s subsidiary, Japan Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing (JASM). With an anticipated operational date by the end of 2027, the plant is poised to significantly enhance TSMC’s manufacturing capabilities in Japan, catering to the burgeoning market needs.
Backed by an investment exceeding $20 billion, the project has received substantial support from the Japanese government, as well as investments from notable industry players such as Toyota Motor and Sony. Together, these stakeholders aim to bolster Japan’s semiconductor industry, driving technological advancement and fostering economic growth.
The expansion in Japan is part of TSMC’s broader strategy to decentralize its manufacturing operations, aiming to mitigate risks associated with geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions. It underscores the company’s commitment to fostering innovation and adapting to the evolving demands of its global clientele.
Aside from addressing surging demand, the new plant is expected to create around 3,400 skilled job opportunities, providing a significant boost to Japan’s economy and employment landscape.
This announcement comes amidst delays in TSMC’s Arizona project, originally slated for completion by 2026. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the facility’s operational timeline has been pushed to 2027 or 2028. Despite these challenges, TSMC remains steadfast in its commitment to enhancing semiconductor production capacity in the United States.
