Greece has been recognized as one of the world’s most favourable destinations for retirees, securing the ninth spot in the “2023 Best Countries for a Comfortable Retirement” rankings by US News & World Report. This placement is part of a broader analysis, the 2023 Best Countries rankings, which saw 87 nations evaluated by over 17,000 individuals. The parameters for this honour included affordability, tax conditions, friendliness, livability, climate, property rights respect, and public health infrastructure.

Switzerland led the list, with its robust economy and high safety standards outpacing the high cost of living. Following were Portugal and Australia, with New Zealand and Spain completing the top five and Denmark landing at number ten.

Greece’s impressive rank is highlighted by the fact that it surpasses several European peers and economies traditionally seen as more powerful, like Japan and the U.S. This Mediterranean jewel continues to shine, as evidenced by its consistently high performance in global retirement indices, having previously been ranked seventh in the 2023 Annual Global Retirement Index.

The allure of Greece is multifaceted, combining affordable living costs—20% lower than in the U.S.—with breathtaking scenery and a cuisine celebrated worldwide. Greek culture, emphasizing gastronomy, offers a delectable experience for those seeking a leisurely and enjoyable retirement.

However, Greece faces the significant challenge of an aging population, with a steady decline since 2011. Eurostat projects it will have the EU’s oldest population by 2030. The 2022 Census indicated a 3.5% population drop, bringing the number of permanent residents to 10,432,481, with all but one of its regions reporting a decline. An aging demographic, coupled with economic hurdles and a lower birth rate, points to a future where Greece may lose up to two million people by 2070.

Greece emerges not only as a picturesque retirement locale but also as a country grappling with demographic shifts. As retirees from across the globe seek out its shores for a serene post-career life, the nation concurrently navigates the complexities of an increasingly elderly population. For those considering retirement destinations, Greece offers a blend of economic advantages, cultural richness, and a temperate climate, all the while facing the imperative to address its population dynamics for sustained allure.
